  • A Twelve Act Musical, on the occasion of the Hundredth Remembrance of the Disaster in 1912.

  • And the simultaneous anniversary of The Legend, only nowadays nearly all the characters of 1912 survive. Plus the thought that it's still best never to tempt the Gods.

TiTANiC 2012

On April 14, 2012, it will be exactly one hundred years since the unsinkable TiTANiC of the famous White Star Line sank to the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean on her maiden voyage. As time goes by, the disaster has captured the imagination of four billion people. It will continue to inspire writers and moviemakers alike. TiTANiC 2012 will be a variation on the well-known theme. It will, beyond any doubt, surprise the whole world to learn what could have and what should have happened on that harrowing night of the 14th of April 1912.

TiTANiC 2012 explores an alternative scenario. It is the same story of the maiden trip with a plausible survival. 1st officer William McMaster Murdoch and his assistant 5th officer Harold Lowe decide on a head-on collision with the iceberg. TiTANiC then plunges her bow deep into the water, but she completes her trip and steams, crippled but safe, into New York Harbour. There are also causalities: fifteen crew members died who, during the crash, happened to be asleep in their bunks in the forward part of the ship, the fo'c'sle (forecastle). However 15 is certainly not the same as 1500, yet in Court, the Board of Inquiry condemns Murdoch and Lowe's decision to let the TiTANiC strike the iceberg head-on and judges it utterly inappropriate. The 15 lost lives weigh heavily. Everyone refuses to come to grips with the fact that it was simply impossible to avoid hitting that monstrous mass of ice in one way or another and that, by letting it scrape the TiTANiC underside for 300 feet, the result would have been far worse. J.Bruce Ismay, White Star's owner, remains the stubborn selfish socialite who wants to get his way by setting a speed record in crossing the Atlantic in five days. The fact that the owner was aboard, and Captain Edward Smith should have kept ultimate authority, still belongs to the myths.

The young 5th officer Harold Lowe plays a special role: he and Ismay become rival suitors. Despite his insignificant rank, Harold ignores J.Bruce's power play and has the audacity to court Rosalind Henlooopen, Ismay's fiancée. Rosalind, thirteen years older than Harold. She is not only well-to-do, she's still very attractive. Without any loss of her adventurous spirit, she remains sufficiently hedonistic to ignore slanderous gossip or criticism. Ismay sees her as his future wife, but Harold Lowe seems a much better proposition. Apart from these characters, there is the rich 'unsinkable' Molly Brown, who in the real story, immediately took command of a lifeboat. There is also Benjamin Guggenheim, father of Peggy, the later founder of the Venice Museum. Ben is accompanied by his wife and mistress Leontine Aumont, a wealthy French woman. Leontine not only is the mistress of Mr Guggenheim but also Mrs Guggenheim.

They are eccentrics, those Guggenheims. Ben Guggenheim, in James Cameron's film, was the man who removed his life jacket in order to change it for an elegant evening dress before he drowned. He graciously resigned to fact that the inevitable was high. Molly also wanted to be kissed; in her case by a man, Cief Mate William Murdoch. The man who decided for the head-on collision with the iceberg. During sessions of the Board of Inquiry, Captain Smith suddenly commits suicide with the Browning from the TiTANiC-safe. He blames himself for being so stupid as to obey J.Bruce Ismay. A safe speed would not have killed fifteen men. For the others, there are surprising endings and love stories for the leading and secondary roles.

In cooperation with Dolf de Vries composer / arranger of the Dutch Metropole Broadcasting Orchestra, Jan van Buuren wrote the musical version of TiTANiC 100. The songs are musically based on the strength of the 9-man (instrumental) Dance Orchestra of the Marine Band of the Royal Dutch Navy. The TiTANiC 2012- project for will be also realised under the auspices of the Royal Netherlands Marine Museum,Rotterdam (Patroness Marjan Groen)
